About Micro-needling

Also known as Collagen Induction Therapy (CIT), micro-needling involves inserting very fine, short needles into the skin to create controlled micro-injuries for skin rejuvenation. Using a device called a dermapen, thousands of tiny punctures are made in the skin’s outermost layers. The needles typically range from 0.5 to 2.5 mm in length.

This controlled injury stimulates the body’s natural healing process, boosting collagen and elastin production, which helps the skin look younger and healthier. Micro-needling has been shown to improve acne scars, stretch marks, large pores, freckles, and burns. It also helps tighten skin, lighten pigmentation, and reduce scarring.

Am I a Candidate for Micro-needling?

Your doctor can help determine if micro-needling is right for you. Generally, good candidates include:

  • Healthy individuals without serious illnesses or healing impairments
  • Those with realistic goals and a positive outlook
  • People bothered by acne scars, stretch marks, or large pores
  • Individuals with fine lines and wrinkles

Risks

Micro-needling is a safe procedure with thousands of successful treatments performed annually. Significant complications are rare, but minor side effects can include:

  • Mild pain
  • Reddening of the skin (erythema)
  • Swelling
  • Warmth, tightness, or itching
  • Minor bleeding

As with any procedure, there is a risk of bleeding, infection, and allergic reactions to materials used. Following your doctor’s instructions carefully before and after treatment helps minimize these risks. If you have concerns, consult your doctor.

Results and Recovery

Redness usually fades within a few days. Because collagen production and skin healing take time, visible improvement may take several weeks and continue for four to six months post-treatment. The first noticeable changes are improved skin firmness and elasticity. Collagen growth typically takes up to three months but varies by individual. There is no downtime associated with micro-needling, allowing you to resume daily activities immediately. Ask your doctor for personalized information about your recovery and expected results.

How Can Micro-needling and PRP Be Used Together?

Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is a natural product derived from your own blood. After drawing blood, it is spun in a centrifuge to separate red and white blood cells from plasma and platelets. This plasma, rich in platelets, helps tissue heal and regenerate new cells.

PRP is commonly combined with micro-needling. The tiny channels created by micro-needling allow PRP to penetrate deeper into the skin when injected or applied topically, enhancing healing and rejuvenation.
