What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a minimally invasive skin-exfoliation procedure designed to treat sun damage, scars, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation. Beyond cosmetic benefits, it also improves circulation and lymphatic flow. Results are visible immediately, with no downtime, allowing patients to resume regular activities right after treatment. Usually performed in-office without anesthesia, microdermabrasion can be combined with other treatments like chemical peels or laser therapy.

Microdermabrasion is gentler than dermabrasion, which is a surgical procedure removing several layers of skin to treat more serious conditions.

The Procedure

During the treatment, typically performed by an aesthetician, a handheld device sprays tiny aluminum oxide crystals onto the targeted skin area. These crystals, along with dead skin cells, are then suctioned away by a vacuum tool, revealing fresh, smoother skin underneath. Sessions last from 5 to 60 minutes. Results from a single treatment are temporary, so repeat sessions every 2 to 4 weeks are recommended for ongoing improvement.

Risks and Considerations

Microdermabrasion is safe for all skin types, including Asian and darker skin tones that may be prone to discoloration from other treatments. Side effects are generally mild and may include slight redness and irritation. Patients over 70 may have a higher risk of bruising or skin abrasions. Sun protection is crucial after treatment because the skin’s natural defenses are temporarily reduced.

Patients with a history of cold sores may experience a reactivation of the virus due to microdermabrasion. In such cases, avoiding treatment near the lips or using preventative antiviral medication before the procedure may be advised.
