What Is JUVÉDERM® XC Injectable Gel?

JUVÉDERM® XC is an FDA-approved dermal filler developed by Allergan, Inc., designed to temporarily treat moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, particularly nasolabial folds, in adults over 21. Unlike the original JUVÉDERM formulation, JUVÉDERM XC is enhanced with lidocaine to increase comfort during injection.

This smooth-consistency gel works by restoring volume beneath the skin, effectively softening facial lines and folds. It is made from hyaluronic acid (HA), a naturally occurring sugar in the body that helps hydrate the skin, deliver nutrients, and maintain elasticity and structure. Over time, aging and sun exposure reduce HA levels in the skin, leading to volume loss and the formation of wrinkles. JUVÉDERM XC is especially effective at minimizing the appearance of nasolabial folds—the lines that extend from the sides of the nose to the corners of the mouth.

JUVÉDERM XC Injectable Gel Procedure

A typical JUVÉDERM XC treatment takes about 15 minutes and is performed in a doctor’s office. A fine needle is used to inject the gel beneath the skin in the targeted areas, adding volume and smoothing out wrinkles. Because the formula contains lidocaine, most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure. However, a topical anesthetic may still be applied before the injection if desired.

After injection, the doctor may gently massage the treated areas to ensure even distribution. Patients can usually resume their regular activities right away. To minimize the risk of side effects, it is recommended to avoid strenuous exercise, alcohol, and prolonged sun or heat exposure for the first 24 hours following treatment.

Results of JUVÉDERM XC Injectable Gel

Results are visible immediately after the injection. Any swelling or bruising typically resolves within a few days and can be managed with ice packs. The effects of JUVÉDERM XC usually last between 6 to 9 months and sometimes up to a year. However, individual results vary, and supplemental “touch-up” treatments may be necessary to maintain optimal results.

While JUVÉDERM XC is generally considered safe, side effects can occur, mostly at the injection site. These may include:

  • Redness
  • Pain or tenderness
  • Firmness
  • Swelling
  • Lumps or bumps
  • Bruising
